“Rookie on Love” is a single subject anthology, compiling stories, essays and poems about love. This unique book would be perfect as a gift for any young person in your life, as it is so digestible- you can dip in and out of the book at your leisure. It definitely helped me to get out of my new year reading slump, as I felt accomplished after reading a few essays and poems.

I liked reading "Rookie on Love" in snippets; it gave me time to contemplate some of the essays. As expected, I didn't connect to every single one of them, but a select few were so profound and spoke to me on a personal level that I could relate to them immensely; they were reflective, heartfelt and beautifully written. There are such a vast collection of pieces in the collection that everyone will have different ones that will become ingrained in their memory.

Furthermore, the comics slotting in perfectly with between the essays and the poems. Also, the illustrations that accompanied some of the pieces were beautiful- they complemented the words well.  Before reading "Rookie on Love", I wasn't aware of the magazine, but I liked how the book is standalone and I could get to know the spirit of Rookie through the concise but personal introduction from Gevinson.

If you look at the perfectly designed, colourful cover, it captures the tone of this book. It’s unique, varied and relatable. "Rookie on Love" should definitely be on your TBR pile.
